Default Empire Total War : can't play online

So I've got my key and I've got steam working - I play single player okay. I can't play online. I can't see any LAN games I host or my mate hosts and I can't play "randoms" on the net - the game browser shows nothing or says "can't connect to server" or some such.

My mate and I have our own steam accounts and our own (legit) CD-keys. Steam works fine - no firewall issue's that I know of. I have a router - could that be it? There don't seem to be many others out there with this issue.

O.k Your Router could be the problem (Check Your port forwarding), but I'd say You have the region set incorrectly It works on world zones, so make sure You and Your Mate are connecting to the same Zone (I'm not 100% about this Fox, But I'll check when I get home )

Well - I did two things and I'm not sure which one fixed it!

I changed my region in Steam from Aust - Vic to Aust - Qld and I can now see three games hosted on the battlelist. Frankly, I'd expect to see dozens but three is an improvement on none!

I then changed my STEAM region to California and now I can see hundreds of games!!!

I truely hate steam. Despise it. Thanks for your help Welshman!

Glad You got it fixed Fox,
Don't be too down on Steam, I believe they are going to make it that You just click on yer friends list and Join Game...But as I said If You and Yer Mate are going to test it out make sure yer both set to the same region, especially the one Hosting
And I see You're a Nud like Me Mate, Never sleeps

I think we can compete on our dislike for Steam. I had to create another account as steam could not seem to email me my old password, then when my internet went down it took me 20 minutes to get into the game because Steam REALLY wanted to connect, took forever for the Play offline button to come up.

If this was not a Total War game I may not have purchased it because of Steam. After Half Life 2 and Steam I really don't want Steam on my PC.

Where are you from Troopa? You haven't put any geographics in your profile so let us know where you are and see if we can help.
