Default Empire: Total War gaming tips

There is so much that is not documented on ETW I thought I'd start a thread. I'm not looking for a bug list (but feel free to list them) as anyone can google bugs but I'm looking for "I didn't know that!" type of tips in the game. Put the obvious and not so obvious one's and even questions if you like :-

Naval

I captured 8 trade ships in one battle. I did NOT get to keep those ships but I got 4000 coin at the end of the round.

A captured ship never says captured. It just surrenders and ceases to be a factor for the rest of the game.

You can't rescue drowned sailors.

I have placed a large navy on an enemy trade route and I'm unsure if I'm getting funds from that. When I mouse over the route the trade for the enemy nation remains the same. When a pirate blockades my route then the trade I get says zero. This is inconsistent and not sure if that's a bug.

Demasted ships can still turn and bring weapons to bear very slowly.

If you click your ship and tell it to attack another ship the AI will set a direct path even if it is dead into the wind. You will surely lose your ships. Its painful but I set my path for every ship so that it is not into the wind and sets up a broadside to the enemy.

When vastly outnumbered get all your ships to use chainshot on just one or two enemy ships. Chain shot will demast and neutralise the enemy ship. You can then work on the rest of the fleet and pick off the stranded ships one at a time when the battle is mostly over.

Land

If deploying stakes your own horses and those of your allies (multi-player) will not be harmed by them. The enemy AI will charge right into them as though they were hidden.

If you have your units shoot through friendly units they will TK your own men, including artillery! If you have a unit behind another unit as reserve then turn off "fire at will" otherwise you'll be shooting up your front line units. If you are positioned on a hill you might be lucky enough to get away with this.

Grenadiers are uber fun. You can toggle on their grenades which has a much shorter range than gunfire so it may appear they are doing nothing. When a unit comes in range they will pepper the target and do awesome damage. Even a slow moving unit will dodge most grenades so don't hit grenade until the enemy unit is stationary. The grenade button will toggle off automatically so remember to turn it on each time.

Strategy

Land armies can "repair" to full strength while moving on the campaign map.

Repairing land armies weakens their experience but is necessary.

If an army stays stationary on the campaign map for two turns it can dig in and have fortifications available to it on the battle map.

When you open your techtree mid/late game be aware you might have more than 3 schools available for research. Use the arrow scrolly thing at the top to see more than the first three schools.

Some armies can't cross some sea bridges for some reason. I assume that's a bug.

When an ally goes to war and you're offered the choice to war or not, declining to go to war seems to have minimal impact.

Anyone else having white screen crashes when the game goes to auto save? Then getting Microsoft error reports? My game will do this after about 20-30 turns?? Quite annoying, can normally fire the game up again and start from where it left off but sometimes i have to go back to the previous save point?

Some good tips in there Fox, some of those naval battles are difficult. thx.

Dear Abby,
The advice you get in game concerning trade ships says to put them in trade areas and, presumably, they will then ply the trade routes and earn you lots of loot. Well, my trade ship captains seem to be a mutinous lot because I sail the ship to a trade area and all they seem to do is sit there at anchor with the crew drinking all my rum.

Am I doing something wrong?

Granpa - you need to sail to the trade area's like the Ivory coast and the Madagasca area. Once there explore around a bit. You'll see a large anchor symbol in a circle. You need to anchor in that area. There are a limited number of slots but about 6 to 8 in each area so you'll probably find they are all taken. If you're at war with anyone then send an armed escort and free up a slot for your own ships.

White - I get constant crashes to desktop but its usually in combat. I think the game has some major memory leaks at the moment. I use Vista 32 with 4 gig memory.

OK then these crashes aren't just at my end. I just checked the Steam forums and seems that this problem is widespread. I also use 4 gig ram but on XP. Bloody annoying hey. Still, the games great fun.

I'm glad that you ask that question Grandpa cause i'm just now searching around for these trade ports. I'm still only playing "the road to independance"as the Americas but those bloody British keep hammering me.

I'm still looking for them. I've seen the anchor symbol when the other countries are having their move but I'm buggered if I can find them when it's my turn

Grampa Sail one of your fleets South to a large grey Box as if you're going to America or India and this will bring up the Global Travel Map where You'll See the Americas, India Etc, You'll also see Round grey Globes with inter connecting lines click on the Globes and they will take You're fleet to the destination where You'll find the Golden anchors

WSOD seems to be caused by shadow render so I would recommend putting these settings to Low or Off and don't load from a Auto Save

Ya - the trade theatres are only available in some games (not the beginning campaigns). You can enter any grey zone and arrive in any theatre - not sure if that impacts on sailing time but.
