Default Massive RPG on Kickstarter

Hi

I'm Zoltan Gonda, the author of the NWN1 module series, Tortured Hearts (I & II).

TH2 won a gold medal in 2007:
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view...detail&id=5347

Me and my partner Lenore Hoehl have been working hard on a stand-alone RPG which is loosely based on these mods and now we need some material help to get the graphic and sound content done. This is why we chose Kickstarter.

The title is: Tortured Hearts: Or, How I Saved the Universe. Again.

Storywise, the game is DONE.

Here are the features:
-TH satirizes RPG cliches (unlike the prequels)
-Light-hearted story of a jaded, thrill-seeking adventurer
-No need to play the prequels beforehand, but ofc there are refs for those who have played them
-6 playable races: human, elf, dwarf, gnome, halfling, half-orc
-Classic 6 person party (you can open their inventories for instance)
-Non-linear gameplay, open-ended world with 3 choke points
-Over 200 areas
-Over 500 NPCs
-Over 100 quests
-About 100-150 hours of gameplay (just like the "prequels")
-A long and complicated plot
-A crafting system if you like to spend your play time working
-Almost 500,000 words of dialog (including henchman conversations) already written, plus a journal to keep track of quests.
-A variety of henchmen who contribute in an interactive way with the PC
-A henchman relationship system which can lead to romance
-A character development system wiith no classes
-All the quests and conversations are scripted and tested, so that the game is playable now in the development environment
-Combat system is designed but not implemented: so far it has been planned as a real-time system but it could be changed to turn-based

There's a discussion forum and place to vote on the combat system at:
http://www.torturedhearts.com
(Sorry for the spartan page)

The money we ask for may sound a bit steep at first, but please consider the features and the scope of the game. The budget is very, very tight.

And finally, here's the link:

Thank you for your attention, time and help

Zoltan

I wish you the best of luck as your NWN1 stuff was good, but it's a bit old now so I'm not sure if you'll have the fan-swell necessary to secure 300K off the back of that alone.

Also, a tech video and a handful of models doesn't seem likely to get you there either. Kickstarter only seems to work in certain rare cases where it's an interesting idea by a fairly famous studio (or famous game designer/writer, such as Tim Schafer). Or you've released a small demo that's got everyone really excited to see more. I also doubt the recent buzz of KS success stories is going to help anyone but the highest profile celebrity projects.

Your video is all about the technology, it's not going to get players excited, graphics programmers maybe, but you're trying to sell tech when you really should be selling the promise of a jolly good adventure!

I say hammer out a small chapter and release it for free. Seduce players with your fantastic story telling and ability to craft enticing new worlds and people will throw money at you because they'll feel it's worth it to see your IP developed and fleshed out. Most (non-celebrity) crowd funded games seem to happen off the back of playable demos/builds entered into IGF and other competitions.

I reckon the key to crowd-funding finding something that within the first 30 to 60 seconds of seeing it people fall in love with your idea. It's like an elevator pitch. If you can show something that does that then I reckon you got a good chance.

Thanks for your kind answer Drac, I really appreciate it.

The game isn't in any sort of shape that could be released to the public. It's meant for the developers only.

As for the tech stuff, at least it shows what we can do and what needs to be done and people seem to like it.

We are trying to revive the old-school RPG genre (just like Wasteland 2), but for this purpose we need the players too.

I'm a little confused, is this a NWN module? I looks like it was built with the Aurora toolset.

The prototype is based on 2 NWN modules and was also made in the Aurora Toolset.
It's not going to be a mod though.

Here's another topic with more information:

I'm still a little confused. Why show a video of how you made the game (?) in another platform than the one you intend to release it in? I'm mostly concerned because as an end user of NWN I thought that using the Aurora toolset for profit was strictly forbidden by the TOS of the game.

Seems you didn't read the text under the video. Please do so. Thanks.

Let me elaborate:

It's our intent. Nothing but the video has been published.

If it ever comes to realization, we'll buy the license.

Still confused?

Whoa there, calm yourself mate. I'm just asking questions because your site was awfully wordy and yet unclear. I just wanted to get a good grasp of what was going on to see if it was going to be something I was interested in getting involved with. It's not but good luck all the same.
