Default Lokking for a specific strategy game

Hello everybody,

i am looking for a special kind of strategy game for a long time now, and havent found anything yet, why i decided to ask an experienced community.

Does anybody of you know, if there is a good strategy game that

takes place on a compact playground, but is deep and hard to master
has a strong ai or active community to play against
plays in a fantasy universe
contains as little luck and randomness (f.e. hidden cards on the opponents hand) as possible.
is fun to play and well balanced and developed

and that

isnt grand strategy (like Civilization)
isnt old enough to have to be emulated (like Xcom)
doesnt contain (or at least much) kingdom administration (like Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Wonders)

To give you an idea of my taste, hera are a few examples of games i like, but not enough to keep playing them:

Chess, great game without luck, but too sterile for my taste
Zatikon, a kind of fantasy chess and generally perfect for me, but with terrible graphics and windowed.
Battle for Wesnoth, a nice game but contains too much luck.
Magic the Gathering, expensive as hell and contains too much random elements.
Cabals, another form of Action-Chess. But, besides the poor developement, the hidden opponents hand makes it impossible to plan the own strategy properly.

Thanks in advance and greetings to everybody

Thats a kind of "Defence of the Ancients" Game, right?
Hm...
Might be worth a try indeed.

I was actually hoping somebody would know some kind of chess-like fantasy game, but as i was writing in my OP, i really searched and played for a long time and still didnt find any serious project, so might have to accept, that real-time is the next logical step...

Thanks to "The Omen" in this regard. I couldn't think of better suggestions, if somebody was asking for great strategy games

Yeah. LoL is a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game, same as DOTA, and it's successor DOTA 2.
I like LoL a lot, but the general community isn't much to shout out about (though we have a good Division here in TOG).

I have both SC 1+2, and a C&C collection, so RTS is very popular with me.

Company of Heroes is my favorite, but that doesn't really fit your specs as it is WWII based.

Have you tried anything in the Total War series?

Company of Heroes is a great game indeed and a good addition to more "straight" games like Starcraft.

From the Total War Series, I've played Shogun, Rome and Medieval, but the combination of huge 3D-Battlefields, R(eal)T(ime) and T(urn)B(ased) really turned me off.
Sometimes I really wished I could like real-time-games as much as anybody else seems to, as they really represent the best strategy games...

Massive Assault Domination or -Network 2 is another great chess-like game i can recommend to everybody, but sadly hasn't been developed for many years...

I just got this from Steam Dawn of War Franchise Pack.
The price I got was at 75% $9.90.
Now it just only 50% $19.90, you might want to wait if the Pack went to 75% again .
Played it for a few days and it is super addictive.
