Do you have ip v6 enabled? If so kill it. For whatever reason (and as far as I know it is not fixed) Java hates ipv6 if it is not the active connection. The result is freezes.

Depends on what you get. If you go for a pure VPS type environment you can do as you please. Most the gaming services I have looked at so far it would be one per subscription.

Only thing I would say about multiplay is, ignore the per slot cost. If we assume we want at least 4G for the server in terms of memory it puts you at more like $3 per slot (with spring discount)....

That is good to know, it is much less than I would have thought. Most of the hosting I have seen (based on the memory we require) talks about 3000 - 5000GB/month.
