Default Advice for FPS newbie

Hello!

New member to TOG, currently playing in the EU-Lord of the Rings kinship.

I have a nice shiny new PC ordered, which is due to arrive in a few days (Intel E6600, 2gig ram, X1950Pro etc.. so highish end, though by no mean top top end... pc is crossfire ready, so will throw another x1950 in it soonish).

Anyhows... what this brings me to is I am feeling the urge to dip my toe into the world of FPS games, and am so out of the loop, I am looking for advice on what game(s) I should pick up.

Last FPS games I played were Quake3(arena?), UT2001(I think) and tried CounterStrike:Source but never lasted more then about 4 seconds before being shot in the head! I don't like games where you spend all the time in the dark (IE Doom3), or where the average life expectancy is seconds, it would be nice if it was a game I could load up and have a 20 minute blast in at times, as well as something a little more involved(so more teamplayish).

Hope this makes some sense! All advice greatly appreciated.

mmmm from what you mentioned I recommend Enemy Territory
It has ALL the elements you said you like and best of all it's free!

game - linky -
patches - linky -

make sure you patch up to v2.60b
• run v2.60 first
• overwrite binaries to patch to v2.60b (see readme file)

any probs let me know!

Thanks Ned!

I will download and give it a go, I had forgotten about Wolfenstein stuff, played RTCW ages ago(the single player bit), and once I got out of the dark tombs(the bit at the beginning i seem to recall) I rather enjoyed it.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I'd have to agree that enemy territory is a good game to try. It can be a little overwhelming at first so I would strongly suggest joining the ET division even if you never play a competition match.

The ET guys are incredibly helpful and from what I can remember before being banished there were plenty of FAQ's and handy links in the ET forum.
