Default In-Game Advertising Questionnaire and Discussion

Quote:
Hey all,
I’m a student from Newcastle, England, who is currently working on my Marketing dissertation and I was wondering if some of you would be so kind to help me out by filling in a questionnaire I have devised, in relation to In-Game Advertising.
As a fellow gamer, I have always been interested in the growing trend towards companies entering the market via In-Game Advertising (IGA), and have always questioned “Does In-Game Advertising really prove effective?”, to which I hope to answer in my completed report.
No personal information is required, No email addresses or anything, just a case of giving your opinion on a few questions.
Thanks
"Does In-Game Advertising really prove effective?”

And just to get a discussion going in here, what is everyone's view on In-Game advertising? Is it good for the industry? Should we embrace it or should we fight it? Is it wrong for companies to record our personal details?

well... im not overly happy with them recording our personal details cause they will just sell that info to scumbags we have no interest whatsoever in dealing with who will start filling our inboxes etc with crap.

ingame advertising....in principle im opposed but if its done tastefully then i dont mind....

eg the advertising on the billboards in the trian stations in hellgate london....i dont mind those since they blend in and can be ignored. The presence of Dell XPS branded computers in tabula rasa...you ignore it fast enough. A car racing game with massive billboards with glaring advertisments..unless there was a third party app to remove them i wouldnt buy such a game regardless of how good it is

Personally I don't have a real problem with it. The only time I hate advertisements, is when they are loud, both audible and visible. No flashing ads, no loud sound-bytes... if it's a poster or billboard I'm fine with it.

Battlefield2 added a new patch that had a new map with it. In the bootscreen for the map was an ad for intel. To be honest, I thought less of intel for it. It just feels cheap often.

Car racing games I think it's perfect. Look at any racing circuit and you'll see banners everywhere. It's not invasive at all, and if it brings the price of the game down, then even better.

As for being "profiled" with my gaming tastes and preferences being sent off to advertising companies... bring it on! Seriously! The more I get profiled, the better "they" will get at selling me appropriate products. I don't want viagra ads, I don't want mobile phone deals... show me ads that appeal directly to me, and I'll even look at them! Hell, I may just click on them, and whoa.. even buy a product.

So long as there are no pop-ups, flashing or annoying advertisements, I'm all good for it.

I don't mind IGA too much in certain conditions, if it's passive and in a realistic context such as billboards around a race track or sports ground for example then it's not too bad, it can even enhance the realism to an extent. However if it is in a game I buy then I expect to get some added value myself such as a reduced price.
If the advertising is non passive, ie the gameplay stops to show me ads or if the ads are out of context or too invasive then forget it, I won't be playing. The other big no no for me would be any form of data mining or profiling.
