Default UT3 vs UTx

Hello!

I'd like to discuss the UT series and it's popularity.

-what is your fav UT version?
-what main points do you like best about you fav version?
-if anything, what don't you like about your fav version?
-how does your fav version compare to other versions?
-why do you think UT3 hasn't 'taken off'?

These are only a few questions i thought off... i just wanted to discuss this series. Seems to me online gaming has gone a bit stale. Look at the popularity of CoD4?!? It offers very little of anything new compared to it's previous titles yet it's the most popular recently released game. I do think CoD4 is a top game but not that good. Maybe other titles have failed partially due to the change factor. Do we not want something different? Maybe this is why it's so hard to get many players in many different games to play custom maps and mods.?

With all that in mind, what do you think the next version of UT needs in order to be a top online game?

When this game first came out, it was giving a massive number of players many headaches just trying to connect online. Gamespy account issues? The news of this would have spread like wildfire, hence making people delay purchase. There are a few gamers out there that have taken fully to UT3. I guess these are the die hard fans of the whole Unreal series. There are numerous custom maps available, which we did include on our TOG UT3 server (thanks to Arkon for making that happen). Locally there are not too many playing, but you can always find a few servers that will have a handful of players, and more will join through the session.

This is my first multiplayer/online game apart from when I'd get on XBOX live for racing games, so i really can't comment on how the game has changed from previous versions. Personally, I really enjoy UT3. The last Unreal game I played was the original Unreal.

A couple of things I have read about would be, that the game is too fast (good reason for it not being suitable to an older gamer?), single player campaign and AI is a joke, menu is rubbish, online menu does not give enough info, system requirements too steep. The only thing I'd really like to see implemented is a better online menu such as you would see in ET:QW or COD4. You're kind of left in the dark online in UT3 in regards to where your "friends" are playing. You could pre-arrange a time and server, but that's not always practical.

For me, it's a great game, and it's good one for a quick fix of gaming.

I could add to this with some lengthy post about my opinions etc.....but to put it bluntly UT2004 is still the best UT game ever !!!

Arkie standing in corner with eye's twitching , trembling all over cold flushes then slowly speaks UT3 UT3 cough cough runs out room screaming blah blah blah . I much prefer the older version than the newer one only due to the problems the game has had and not being address quick enough. I do like the game graphics and game play .

I think most of the reasons that UT3 didn't exactly set the world on fire have already been covered in this thread but I think another big reason why it failed was due to the sheer amount of competition from other AAA titles that were released later last year, people only have so much gaming time and money to spend on games and when they see a dodgy demo and read negative comments all over about UT3, then it's easy to dismiss it with so many other good games around to play.
I think the marketing of the game was all wrong too, I don't know if you guys got the TV adverts for UT3, but over here they made it look like it was a mainly single player game with multiplayer elements and the marketing seemed to be more focused on the console version.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

For me UT2004 is the superior product.

UT3
-less client options than UT2004
-removed LMS and Assault gametypes (my favourites)
-by default couldn't bind the TAB key to show scores (WHAT THE F#$K?!?)
-yet again no Punkbuster

With the initial bugs, they don't worry me in games much as they're usually patched. However, just the above points alone did it for me. It's a real shame because it didn't have to be this way.

The TAB issue proves that the PC version wasn't taken seriously. I'm quite sure over 90% of gamers use it to 'show scores'... and the reduction of simple menu options and gametypes is just depressing. The mod community may yet save this game to a degree. Here's hoping!

btw, i sorted the TAB issue by editting a .ini file
post here if you would like to use TAB to 'show scores' and i'll explian how it's done

here you go...

• go to your Config folder and find UTInput.ini
default location C:\Documents and Settings\name\My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\Config\UTInput.ini
Make a backup of this file. If everything goes crazy after you perform the following edit then simply replace the editted file with the backup.

• open UTInput.ini
I recomend using Notepad to edit most gaming configs.

• Find the following lines:
Code:
Bindings=(Name="F1",Command="GBA_ShowScores")

ConsoleKey=F10
TypeKey=TAB
Edit the lines as follows:
Code:
Bindings=(Name="TAB",Command="GBA_ShowScores | Stat FPS | Stat NET | OnRelease Stat FPS | OnRelease Stat NET")

ConsoleKey=Tilde
TypeKey=Tilde

Now TAB will show scores and ` will open the console.

NOTE

For an unknown reason to me just changing the binding over to TAB doesn't work. An additional command added to this line is required for the TAB change to take affect so I added some status commands. Pressing TAB will now show you scores and you will also see your FPS and connections status.

btw, have your say, please vote!

UT3 is my favourite now, but only because I played UT2k4 to death and am not really interested in playing it so much anymore. I love UT3, graphics are great, sound fabulous - once I got the game stable enough to run 95% of the time. What I dislike about it is the lack of online functionality. I am so used to the Steam servers and friends lists (which I use to play DODS, TF2, RO) that I expect everything else to be that functional.

Why hasn't it taken off? Who knows. Unstable. Lots of FPS competition. Great pity really.
