Well, looking through the steam forums (stupid me), I stumbled across this Game Tweak Tips (AA, VSYNC, MICS etc) - Steam Users' Forums post which is a must read for the following reason:

Borderlands steals your microphone and doesn't have push to talk, or even talk sensitivity - it just transmits constantly. So, to be able to use mumble or vent or whatever the post details how to disable voice chat ingame!

Also, apparently the 8800, 9800, and some of the GTX cards at least have a display issue. This can be resolved by rolling back to August's drivers (available in nVidia's archives).

Here is the very simple yet weird fix.
When you go to Multiplayer and you want to go to the lobby, put your mouse over join game, and hit enter several times.

Nice heads up Mighty. Makes a separate voice app a necessity doesn't it.

Thanks. I had this last night and was too tired to look for a fix, I just gave up and went to bed.

There already is Borderlands channel on the Mumble server, made sure that was sorted before launch

I don't know if this counts as a tip or not, because maybe its only me who had this problem. Last night I played maybe 3 or 4 hours of Borderlands online and at level 10 I decided to call it a night. When I went to quit, I clicked exit and it said 'you can't save your game at this time, all progress will be lost'. I frantically ran around trying to find ways to 'save' although eventually an alt+tab crashed my borderlands and all progress was indeed lost (oh my sweet loot *sniff*).

When I relogged into that particular online game, this time attempting to exit said 'progress will be saved' and also the white borderlands logo indicating 'game saved' would flash in the top right hand corner about every 30 seconds (didn't appear once in the whole 3 + hrs of the previous session).

So the warning is = it is possible for you to get a glitch where your progress isn't saved in multiplayer.

The tips is = when you first start your multiplayer session, check that you are getting the saved game symbol and that the exit menu says your game will be saved. That way you can proceed with confidence.

Apparently a patch for this problem is in the works gash. Good tip on how to spot the problem early!
