I still think Unity is a better choice for someone starting out. It's free, has most of the same features and has a web player plugin like flash and you don't have to worry about the tricky licence untll you earn over $100,000 USD in a year, unlike the UDK which will start scraping 25% after $5000.

But I'm not sure how many developers there are in TOG. I posted about Unity a week or so ago and it didn't get a single reply.
