That's all a few of us do and as long as:
- you have that port forwarded (by your router) correctly to your gaming PC;
- you have either that port or the Borderlands.exe added as an exception to your gaming PC's firewall; and,
- Gamespy doesn't screw-up...
...you should be good to go for "private" hosted games (you may need more ports open for "public" games).
The key here is (3) above - even if you have no firewalls at all, Gamespy can still manage to stuff-up. We've found the following helps (but is not a dead-set guarantee of success):
- host should start a single player game, then when ready send out invites to friends to join; and,
- if the connection fails, the clients (ie., not the one hosting) may need to restart either Steam or even their whole machine (yes, we've found a Steam or PC restart can sometimes make the whole thing work when the host hasn't changed anything and was still running around in-game).
Others have had their own success with Hamachi (or other VPN solutions) or GameRanger.
