I know a few that do that and do so honestly.. if they like the game they'll then purchase it to support the developers.

Number of torrent downloads does not equal total $ lost!

Its a pain breaking the law to get a demo though, why should we have to do it?
(I don't, just saying)

Well see I just don't, and ergo I don't buy the game.

Likewise. I can't see it working too well for them and it becoming the norm to be honest. Most Free Trials and Demo's seem to be reactive marketing these days (due to the game's popularity drop) rather than a part of a solid initial marketing campaign, which may due to be budget constraints initially but must hurt them in the long run surely.

My problem is worse,if a new game comes out, wife and son want to play as well....I've been stung b4 with paying nearly $300 to find out it's shyte (thank you FFoW).
Demos help me decide whether to shell out the cash or not, otherwise I might check it out........don't get me wrong I will pay for games as I believe in supporting the gaming industry, but I dont have endless supply of money so I want to get best bang for buck.

Demos have been on the way out for a while. Studios get bigger, projects become more complex and deadlines get shorter. Cutting the demo out makes sense if it helps them get more of the actual game completed before it ships. Valve and Blizzard are in a unique position in that they've made their names synonymous with extended deadlines and quality games, I presume the only reason StarCraft II has a beta release was because it has such huge shoes to fill and Blizzard really has to get it right, as did HoN and LoL.

Wouldn't really bother me though, I haven't installed a demo in years. I think MechWarrior 4 was the last one I played and I had every intention of buying the retail version anyway. From a combination of publisher PR spiel, reading a variety of reviews and waiting for a good price I tend to get all the games I'd like to play at a price I'd like pay. It's a lot easier to look for reviews and deals now with the internet, pre-net all you had were magazines and demo disks.

Yeah there's a mechwar thread on that, eagerily awaiting the links.

As for demo's, COD4 had a demo. So I bought the game, then I bought COD5 too. I'd have bought COW:MW2 if they'd had dedicated servers and custom mapping for pc. That's the $ to benefit ration of 1 demo.
