Default CoD hates my comp.. Tech help?

So recently my CoD has been having a critical error, and it is starting to happen more and more frequently. I have tried reinstalling CoD, and gfx drivers. I havent changed anything between now and the time that CoD used to work fine. I'm almost motivated to format, or burn my PC. But formatting is a pain in the arse, and burning my PC would be liberating, but depressing at the same time.

I'm so sad, I want to game without crashing every 10 minutes.

Help??

I'll go play till I get the error, I dont think it says anything specific. Its just a windows error with codmp.exe.

*EDIT*

Yea, the error gives no relevant information. It just happens because XP and CoD dont feel like playing nicely at the time for some reason. It has me stumped.

I have posted a link in the CoD forum to this thread. Hopefully one of the more technical CoD TOGgers will have the answer for you.

Just a thought.. But have you altered the "hunkmegs" I know if this is set too high you get a windows error and game crashes.

Hey PewP,

Just a thought when you uninstall COD do you physically delete the COD folder. The reason I ask is if you have too many custom maps in the COD/Main folder you will end up with errors, and I'm not sure if a COD uninstall will get rid of the non standard maps etc.

Hope you get it sorted.

Never heard of "hunkmegs".. If its a console command you should let me know what the command is exactly and what the default setting should be, if you can.

Much appreciation for the help guys.

console command: /seta com_hunkmegs 256

I have 1 GB RAM and have hunkmegs set to 512 with no probs.

If you look in COD/Main/config_mp.cfg (open it in notepad or wordpad) scroll down you will be able to find your current setting.

Just a couple of things: What other games do you play? It could be that there is nothing wrong with CoD at all and maybe your hardware is a little unhappy. Long shot, but maybe start by running memtest to make sure that CoD is not accessing messed up RAM that Windows doesn't usually touch. But then again if other more system hungry games run OK then that probably aint it.
