War of the Roses goes FREE UNLIMITED trial today.

Patch just came down and later today anybody who likes should be able to play the base characters (no customisation) for free.
Now because the game is skill based not "unlock" based people do not have to worry about being out unlocked like they would in BF3.

No time limit on the trial. It's permanent.

Such a huge change I thought it deserved its own thread.

This is something similar to Chivalry, I presume?

Destraex 8th February 2013 11:02 PM

Good question. In general yes.
However they are two very different games in the same vein.

If chivalry is BF3 then WOTR is RO2 I would say.

But Chiv is sooo much more fun... esp with other Toggers on Friday Nights :D

Oh not this again. I just don't have the energy for a fight at the moment.
What it comes down to is taste. Its free so if you like medieval slashers give it a go.

I explained in another thread long ago why I was not keen on chivalry but own both. I am a history and realism fan and imho WOTR is the best we have at the moment. I actually wish other toggers would see what I see in WOTR.

The players in WOTR are mostly over 25 where Chivalry players I found tended to be younger. So I am surprised that TOGGERS here went to Chivalry and shun WOTR.

Fun is such a subjective word.

P.S. Danger no offense to you of course. I played with you in RO2 and respect you enough.

I took about 8 friends through it (all over 30) via a LAN yesterday
which I could not attend unfortunately. However to include me they steam called me and we all jumped into roses.
All of them with the free unlimited trial all over 30yrs old. As a result I am told at least a few of them were keen enough to buy it. The others will probably continue to play it at future LANs.
It is great that games like this now open up large groups of friends to playing with each other even without owning the game. Being inclusive (ok this is a reference to an earlier post) will have a good roll on effect I expect. Social gaming is what it is all about.

My thanks to Blink Stalker for being a good sport and taking standard gear he was not used to in order to "go easy" on them while they learned.

I am actually told that when I jumped in game half way through one level that their were exclamations all around the room of "holy bleep its a horse" lol.
I shortly thereafter got off said horse or it would not have been as fun. They had no idea how to deal with the horse or the skill level to knock me off, shoot of kill my horse.

After playing both (on trials/free weekends) I lean towards WOTR myself, but probably because I played a lot of mount and blade I don't mind the control system. That and well.. mounted combat!

Given that its $5 this weekend I might just have to buy it. :)

Of course when chivalry is $5 I'll probably get that too.

I agree though, its a pity there aren't more TOGgers involved in WOTR. I know they are the same genre of game but they both really have different 'feels' and I think one can enjoy both and get something different from each of them.

I just saw this sale, and thought to myself "does TOG play this?" Guess this kind of answers my question. And technically War of Roses came out before Chivalry so its more like Chivalry is similar to this. I know this because all the owners of Mount and Blade got a pre-order deal for owning a M&B copy.

Defiantly gonna give this a shot this weekend.

EDIT: I did a little digging while waiting for War of Roses, seems like chivalry is more of a Teamfortress, mixed with COD game then BF3. I will of course look into Age Of Chivalry if it goes on a 5 dollar sale, but honestly War of Roses was the only one that really tempted me outside of the rumor of a M&B Warband Sequel.
