[D3] Initial Impressions

Hey all,

Doom 3....where to start. We've read and seen the hype, does it stand up to it? So far....HELL YEAH

I've only played it for an hour or so, but so far its incredible.

Graphics

The graphics are excellent. Frame rate for me seems fairly high and constant (see "My new baby" thread in the TOG Hardware forum for my specs) at 1280x1024 with everything but anti-aliasing on.

The game is dark, no doubt about that but it has a brightness setting. I honestly get the impression this game is made to be played in a dark room at night with the lights out

The environments, lighting and shadows are all amazing. The flashlight just looks...."real" when using it. Walking around the base before the shit hits the fan is quite immersive, talking to the people etc. Physics etc are nicely done with boxes falling over realistically etc.

Other people look realistic, facial animation is nicely in sync and the eye motions etc are done quite nicely.

Gun models - only have a pistol at this point so hard to say.

Sound
The sound is truly what makes you shit your pants in this game. No music in game that I've noticed. The voice acting seems good - no cheesy dialogue so far. When the little flying skulls zoom past you the sound is pretty freaky hehe.

Gameplay
The opening to the game and early portion is done like Half Life. You rock up to work and go talk to people etc. Computer consoles etc are all clickable. You get given a PDA which stores emails, voice recordings and videos, similar to System Shock.

Compared to any other ID game, this one has a decent story to go along with the frag anything that moves attitude.


Multiplayer
I havent tried this yet obviously but I know TOG is interested in what modes are contained in the game.

Out of the box - 4 player multiplayer (nostalgia I guess) with 4 modes. I'll just cut and paste from the manual.

Deathmatch
An every-marine-for-himself slugfest. If you’re the marine with the most kills when time runs out, you win.

Team Deathmatch
Pair-up and compete to be the team with the most kills before time runs out.

Last Man Standing
Each marine has a limited number of lives. If all others have fallen and you’re the last marine standing, you win.

Tournament
Two marines battle one-on-one while others watch and wait as spectators. When the battle’s over, the first spectator in line becomes the new opponent while the loser moves to the end of the spectator line. The victor remains in the combat arena until defeated by another marine.

I believe there is support for more players etc but has to be enabled by mod-makers etc.

Summary

Well, so far I love it. The box should come stamped with a big "People who have a heart condition should not use this product". Very atmospheric, very pretty. I cant wait to see what mods come outta the engine.

Anyway, back to the game for me. Shoot away with any questions you have.

Yeah - based off the HardOCP's guide, I reckon my system should be able to give me 30-40fps at 1280x1024 resolution at high graphics level.
