Bugger.
Looks like my PS3 has crapped out its BDROM Drive. I was mid-game (Burnout Paradise, I was online at the time) when the game locked up (Which is rare in itself). When I hard-shutdown and restarted, the PS3 wouldn't load BP again. I tried a couple of other games and it won't read them (one only got as far as the loading screen, another never even registered a disc was inserted), It also won't read Bluray movie discs any more. I've done a bit of a scout of the 'net although PS3 problems are relatively rare, this exact problem is described enough times to be consistently symptomatic of a f*cked Blu-Ray drive. Any other TOGs had this problem? Moreover, any other TOGs had this problem fixed? |

Progress report;
Sony (actually, Playstation has their own entire division, run as a separate entity. Sony Central knew nothing about how PS maintenance was handled. George, they gave me the exact same 1300 phone number) are quite happy to service and/or replace my PS3. Because it's a 60GB (and therefore (loosely) "compatible" with PS and PS2 games), and of course, 60GB models are no longer commercially available, they will replace my PS3 with a "remanufactured unit of same specification, of similar age and condition". Alternatively, they will service repair my unit. They will probably do the former (since it's less hassle for them), in which case, I'll have a replacement in 20-25 working days from receipt of my PS3. If they repair instead of replace, it will be 6-8 weeks. Either way, I'll be without PS3 for at least a month. ![]() And yes, it's out of warranty (I bought it second-hand 4 months ago), therefore "outside of warranty fees will apply". |

Ouch mate...........I feel for you.
I took the extended warrantee through EB when I bought from them on release day. The first year was Sony to fix or replace. The second year is EB Games to fix/replace same model. ie. 60GB HD. I'm currently in my second year. Fingers crossed for you mate. Keep us updated with how it goes.

Cad
I had the EXACT same issue about 3 months ago. exactly... ahh... Get ready to wait. It will be 4 weeks until it is returned. They'll ask you to goto Aussie Post with a printed out barcode and Aus post will give you a B box and some bubble wrap. You'll kiss goodbye to your baby. Before you do all this though! You MUST get a usb stick and copy all your save games to it. You will cry otherwise. By default they will erase every hard disk. None of your content will be returned to you. And don't even think you can back it up externally and then restore it when it comes back. it wont work - they told me so! Its all about copyright BS and basically there was no way to get around losing everything on the HD. All game demos will have to be redownloaded. You know what is funny (not very) the problem occurred for me in the exact same way. I was playing Burnout and it just froze. And that was the end of everything except for downloaded demos and playing music.. anything that didn't require sticking in and reading a disc. When they say 20 working days - they mean it. I think they dont even look at it until about the 19th. There are guys on Youtube who show you how to repair it yourself if you are a bit of a cowboy. Anyway - so 4 weeks passed and as shiny new looking ps3 rocked up with the latest firmware etc installed and I was happy to have it back after a break. I did other things than play PS3 and all in all it wasn't THAT bad. But it sucks hard that it has to happen at all... and u may ask why include a backup feature at all?? Perhaps you can restore but only to the same machine... I'm not sure... anyway.. thats my story that u are living right now.. cya online in a month - send it asap but remember your saves!!
