Interesting article. Doesn't actually say anything, but does bring up some curious questions. Main one is why Fallout3? Why not just make a new game world, and make it one they can have total creative control over. Why pay for the Fallout licence??
One thing he didn't touch on, is that there's a Fallout MMO in the works too. Being created by a completely different company, this may well tie in with a broader picture that we wont be able to see until they are all released. Perhaps its all part of a big plan... Either way, I'll be getting it. I loved what they did with Oblivion, and although I have fond memories of Fallout/2/Tactics, I never really fell in love with the technical stylings. The "feel" of it was what won me over, and I think that is being carried over well - so far. Only time will tell.

It is a pre-established IP that most gamers know about even if they haven't played one.
Oblivion put Bethesda on the map more than any other title and now they are known as an RPG developer (They used to be one... Oblivion showed they do GTA clones these days :P). Combine their public face with an IP that is known as one of the pinnacles of the genre and you have a sure fire hit. Much easier to market a Fallout 3 than a completely new franchise. It's all too depressing to think about really. There are only two developers (neither of which exist any longer) who should have had the right to touch the holy grail of RPGs: Black Isle - Van Buren (the Fallout 3 tech demo Black Isle created in 2003) is the REAL Fallout 3. Just take a look at that - Pretty and faithful to the game's roots. Sadly Black Isle are not around any more. Troika - A company made up of all the key designers on Fallouts 1 & 2 bar Chris Avellone. A company who single handedly made the best and more pure RPG experience available with Arcanum. A company whose name was synonymous with mature storylines that dealt with themes like sex as an adult would versus a barely post-pubescent teenager. There was no developer on the planet more qualified to develop Fallout than Troika. Tim Cain had said in numerous interviews that it was sad for the founding members that they didn't win the bid to purchase the Fallout IP so they could work on the most recent chapter of the RPG legacy they had created. Even Obsidian would be a better pick, especially after my faith in them was restored with Mask of the Betrayer. Anyway I've moaned enough about how Bethesda's involvement scares me more than it excites me in this thread. :P |

Yeah, I mostly agree mate.
However, being a n00b to all things RPG, Oblivion did make it's mark on me, and I remember thinking at the time, "man I'd love to see this with guns!" Mature I know, but being an FPS player from way back, it's who I am. So I'm not against Bethesda tackling Fallout. Besides, they may well have learnt a lot from the failings of Oblivion... one can only hope. Either way, I'm looking forward to delving back into that post apocalyptic future.

Well I personally think Bethesda knows how to build game worlds and I suppose if one was to argue the point, it is not enough just to build game worlds but also to stay in business. Those companies mentioned above couldn't do that so they are useless to us. I still play VTM: Bloodlines and rue the day that Troika went out of business, as I certainly wanted more VTM/White Wolf stuff to play. The original Fallout was definitely good for the times, but if that was still the model I would be less hopeful. I like the more 1st person setup and a bit more interaction. Having the VATS system come into play at will while the ability to be FPS I think is a great idea. I just hope it implements well.
