Mmm... Civ III.

Have lost many a day to that game.

Guess I may have to look a bit closer at that expansion!

Have you played it MP Sleighty? What's the MP game play like?

Initial reviews of "play the world" that I read absolutely hammered it. A lot of issues, apparently. I know they patched it, but from what I read, it would have to be one major patch to fix the fundamental problems that were in the original release.

there have been no problems that have troubled me, I'm currently playing a game with a friend, but the more people would make the game a little more interesting, as the computer players are a little bit predictable some times.

I can't believe I missed this thread.

Ahh, the days of Civ. I too have lost many many many many days to Civ 1-3. It all started with Civ I in first year Uni ... hmmm, no wonder I didn't get great marks.

I've played heaps of Civ II multiplayer but never actually tried Civ III MP (SP++++ tho' :P ). The hardest thing about these games tho' is the time required. If time wasn't such an issue I'd be all up for it.

Civ 1 SP made the 1992 recession more than bearable for a young unemployed accountant. I played a lot of civnet after its release (civ 1 MP) but havent played civ2 or civ3 MP. I played civ2 SP to death but never really got into civ 3 SP due to the time taken for each game.

Is the new "accelerated game" option to reduce the playing time in civ3 MP any good?

There was a recession in 1992?

Yeah, Civ III I think just became too big. Don't get me wrong, I loved the new units and all but it just became a bit too unweildy.

Hi all - I've played a few games with 3 and 4 people both online and on a LAN.

I STRONGLY recommend against playing more than 2 player games with Civ3 - PtW. We successfully managed to play LAN games with 3 people till around the 5-6 cities each mark but then failed with out of sync problems.

Online it is twice as bad - and quite slow. It's often difficult just to get the first round started.

Battles you cannot watch as the graphics don't update correctly (on both LAN and online) and often it takes so long to resolve a battle that you can only attack three-four times per round (using slow simulatious turns!).

Slow Simulatious turns is the only way to play the game online and in LANS that lasts more than 1 hour.

I have heard that the next patch (which has been available for US versions for 4 months) fixes these out of sync problems but the game is still very slow (but if you like the game you can put up with this lack of speed - it isn't terminal).

So in summary - forget about it till the patch comes out (1.21 from memory). Even then then game is slow.

I have to disagree with you !! I'm playing a friend at the moment ( this is our 2nd game) and we are having no problems at all, its best played turn base style. This game is the best of all the civ's for sure except free civ for its time. And yes 3 people is the most I would play this game online and maybe more by email. Civ3 rocks
