I am a little concerned by this. The monthly fee (usually charged in US$) adds up to a sizeable sum over the course of a year, leaving less money to pay for other games. Also, if the MMOG takes developers away from traditional "pay only when you buy" games, thus reducing the number and quality of traditional games then we may all find our gaming costs increasing in the longer term.

One of the main reasons why I'm not wanting to stick my toe into the MMOG water yet.
I think it's complete BS that with PlanetSide, you've got to pay $99 for the game itself and then expect to pay another $20-30 per month in subscription fees. MMOGs should have a very low initial cost and then they make their money out of the subscription fees. In saying that, the $99 or so for PS should either be dropped down to $30 or so, or, if I'm expected to pay $99 for it, I'd expect to get 2 or 3 months of included game time... not just the "Bonus One Month!" that "comes" with the game. This is double-dipping the chip in my opinion. I'm steering away from all MMOG for the moment.

The main reason that I can see they are doing it is simple.
If the game can only be played on official servers, which it needs to log on to, meaning you have to validate the software first to play, then you are doing it for the control. It means that nobody can cheat the system, and get a warez copy, meaning it''s 100% legit to play. From a business sense it is totally understandable. I do however totally agree that the game should be at a cheaper cost initially. Indooroopilly here in Brisbane after talking with Solis at lunch on Thursday may be the best option as they have to compete thier prices with another store in the centre they are in and so sell the games at a much lower price than other EB stores. But I don't yet know how much cheaper. Also, though a large number of the people playing it are going to have to be able to spare the cash to play, a lot of the dumb cocks out there that are too young will not be able to play, and parents will restrict thier payment. It won't stop all of them, but it will hinder them a great deal.

They do it because you pay so much - and they do so little - it's easy. What sort of game play is there? No movie, no story, no nothing... "we allow players to interact with each other, that creates the story!"
The more you play the better your character/clan gets (and the more money they make). It's simple. My ass hurts when I think about these games. It doesn't want to be screwed. |

Perfect business sense.
Business make money and money makes the MMOG go round ... I'm not buying into it though. Quality games but I'm supporting the 'pay once play forever' policy.

It's quite simple really. If a player decides that he doesn't like the game and then quits before the first month, they still have made a 'regular' computer game purchase.
I've been playing MMORPG's for over two years now ... you guys are just a bunch of tight arses.... Pay up ... you know you'll love it ...

I have to admit that I am not very keen on paying $99 for a game that I then have to pay a monthly subscription for so I do believe that the initial cost should be dropped a bit, for instance I believe that anarchy online was only $50 and the latest instalment for UO was $45 and they included one month free.
Gripping aside though I have enjoyed playing AO for the past year even though it was buggy when it was initially released it has become a very solid game. I have to admit I enjoy teaming up with other people and running around doing missions or the static dungeons. I am hopping that SWG will be as stable as AO is now! I have been playing pencil and paper RPGs for a long time and enjoy that side of the MMORPG although there was never that much roleplaying in AO so hopefully there will be more in SWG. |
