Since I posted that comment over two months ago, I've been looking at AoC and I am interested in the combat style. I'll probably try it when it's released

My favourite genre is gothic horror particularly in a fantasy setting and because of this, I've been a fan of the Warhammer universe for over 20 years. So when I heard a Warhammer MMO was being made, I was excited. However I found out it was going to be RvR like DAoC and as I have no interest in PvP, my excitement cooled.
AoC looked interesting, but upon hearing certain aspects (nudity, sex buffs) were part of the game, I lost a some interst in this game as well. Those sorts of game play aspects are perfect bait to attract a horde of chauvinistic and misogynistic teenage boys (the ones aged 13-25). Naked elves dancing on the mailboxes as in WoW will be tame compared to what will go on in AoC.
I'm not really sure if I'll get either game but while WAR is the more likely of the two, it's only by a small margin.

I guess, now that the release of WAR has been back until at least September (if the US "Fall" 08 is accurate), anyone who's not too sure will be able to get a good go at AoC first...

You're right AoC will definitely see more people giving it a try as they wait. I think Fint nailed it on the head in why WAR will end up the winner:
Flint quote-
Those who havent played DAoC, and have only experienced WoW pvp, or FFA PvP or similar, cannot begin to comprehend the way properly implemented RvR affects every aspect of the game. You will find you will recognise and befriend more individual players, and guilds than you do in other games. You will recognise the name of that opposing faction player and speak it in hushed tones, as he is recognised as a great leader and is always seen in the heart of the biggest conflicts... likewiise, there will be friendly players that your realm flocks to and follows into the most dire of situations because the shine like a beacon on the battlefield.... and whats more.... you can be that man.

My basis for looking at the games seems to be different from all of the previous posts. I haven't researched AoC much, because after reading Conan books for about a year, the whole theme just kind of lost its appeal.
Now for WAR, I've been playing the Warhammer mini games and reading some of the books for quite some time. Have even played most of the PC games they have released over the years. WoW programmer's and designers tell you outright that they were heavily influenced by GWs Warhammer universe, hence the reason their orcs and goblins look the way they do, and not like many many other variants already out there. so for me, even though up until now I have only enjoyed pvp in FPS games, I am very much looking forward to WAR and learnign to love a whole new style of pvp.

Oooh, I have been quoted, my life is now complete
According to some more recently information, my hopes and expectations of AoC have lowered somewhat. Where I first believed that you could literally capture any area as a guild, and build any sort of structures on it, it turns out there will actually be limited (4-6 areas), with pre-determined keeps to capture and hold as a guild (one per area). So what I now see is just a weaker version of the WAR keep system, which is a big dissapointment
Also, with the combat, where originally I belived it was going to be a fluid combo based system using combinations of the directional keys to perform your moves, it has now been overhauled and watered down to be a system where you have selectable moves (I believe like a numbered hotbar like in other games), which then starts whatever chain, which then is finished using a direction key. I would have to try it, but this seems pretty cumbersome... a mix of the pain of clicking on the move, and the awkwardness of having to hit the right direction key... the worst of both heh.
Funcom may yet drop a big bombshell which might peak my interest... but for now, WAR is the only way... especially with all the new info being released (so much so, I have pre-ordered the collectors edition.. the first time I have ever paid out for a CE hehe )

I agree that combat might be cumbersome, but I'm tired of the 'WoW style' of combat that almost every MMO uses (and looks like WAR will be) so I'm hoping AoCs combat adds a little more excitement to it.

I now have a mental image of AOC's release: tens of thousands of sullen WAR fans playing AOC just so they can say they've given it a go.
