The TOG Guild Wars Division has come a long way since the days of her first Division Commander (DC), GnR, back in late 2004. From humble beginnings – a single guild and a handful of players -, the Division has grown into an Alliance of five guilds with literally hundreds of members. Now led by Egil, who took up the mantle of DC in early 2009, the Division continues to expand, finding new directions and outlets for players in its ongoing pursuit of glory. But, throughout all of the changes, all of the comings and goings of members and leaders, the heart of the Division has always remained strong.

And what is this heart?

It’s the heart of any gaming community, of course - the players. The TOG-GW Division has been blessed with some of the finest and most caring, helpful and friendly players in the Guild Wars global community. Members who are new to Guild Wars, or even just new to MMOs, will find many helpful Toggers willing to show them the ropes. Indeed, most veteran members of the Division are more than happy to share characters builds and gaming secrets with newer members; regardless of how new or inexperienced you are, you’ll find these vets are willing to invite you into their party for a game or two.

Currently, the Division is structured into five main guilds and one sub-guild. Each main guild represents a different time zone and has an average of 70 members, making the entire Division roughly 350 members strong. Together, these guilds form an Alliance aptly named “The Older Gamers”. Every six months the Alliance changes sides between the warring factions of Cantha: the Kurzick and the Luxon. The sub-guild changes faction at this time as well, but in opposition to the Alliance, providing a way for Toggers to remain in the same faction all year round if they wish.

While the Alliance has always had a strong Player versus Environment (PvE) focus, moves are afoot to increase support for the Player versus Player (PvP) aspect of the game. Already there are sparks of interest, and it is even hoped that, soon, the Division will be able to engage in Guild versus Guild (GvG) gameplay: highly competitive, team oriented battles.

The members of the Division have come to view the Alliance as their guild and their individual guilds as smaller units of it, making the in-game Alliance chat, not the guild chat, the most-used form of communication. The Division also maintains its own private Teamspeak server. Members can often be found socialising in the lobby or planning and coordinating missions in one of the many available channels. Because of this, it’s common to find players of various levels from America, Europe, Asia and Australia teaming up for a mission, quest or dungeon.

Due to its size, structure and relaxed nature, the Division doesn’t depend upon a single individual, or even a small group of individuals, to keep the fun flowing. Guild Leaders, Guild Officers and even ordinary members organize TOG events via both the Alliance chat, Teamspeak and the TOG Forums. A good example would be the Dungeon Runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays: while organized and nominally run by Guild Officer Ellie of TOG2, any Toggers present will carry on the show if she or her fellow Officers can’t be there. In many ways you could say that the Division has taken on a life of its own.

With the coming of Guild Wars 2 in 2010, it’s safe to say that the TOG-Guild Wars will be sticking around for a long time. Look for us in game in the International Districts, or stop by the Hall of Heroes on the TOG Forums to say hello; you’ll get to see firsthand the wonderful attitudes of our members and the welcoming, friendly environment that makes the TOG-GW Division one of the best guilds out there.
