World Golf Tour Beta
It all started with me sitting in the lounge channel of Teamspeak one night, having a chat to people, as I didn’t really feel like gaming.I caught up with Wongdai and he was telling me about this great online golf game called World Golf Tour. Having previously played Tiger Woods golf, I was curious to find out more.
So off I went to the WGT website, and created my character. I found the whole sign up process very fast and I was online learning how to play in no time. The video lesson tutorials are informative and make the game easier to learn. Although I am struggling to get the putting right. Friendship requests were in quickly so I felt at home right away.
History of World Golf Tour
WGT or World Golf Tour, was launched in 2008 and has since found a lot of popularity online, with over 75 million rounds already being played, it’s realistic courses like St Andrews and Black Bethpage, seem to keep people coming back for more.
There are no downloads the game is played fully within the browser. Players are able to customise their profile, join/create country clubs and purchase more equipment from the virtual store with their winnings. There’s plenty of different game types including closest to the hole, alternate shot, 9 hole, 18 hole as well as full tournaments to join, just to name a few. If you like armchair golf and playing with friends or people from around the world then this game is really worth looking at.
I recently had a chat with Dr Death to find out more about the game and the TOG Country Club.
DD how long have you been playing WGT and how did you find out about it?
Been playing for about 6 months now, I found WGT, believe it or not from a link on facebook, I used to enjoy playing a bit of golf for relaxation, joke, anyway followed the link and found that it wasn’t too bad.The graphics are pretty good and the game play is very easy to follow. The graphics are pretty good and the game play is very easy to follow. Putting is a bit tricky with the rolls and hills but as with all games practice makes perfect. there are a variety of tournaments you can enter, most are free but there are premium ones that cost credits to play. You can buy credits to update your club, balls etc and enter the premium tournaments but it is not a necessity as when you level up more items become available to you and there are plenty of free tournaments.
How many members do you have in your club?
After getting a few of my CSS (Counter Strike) players joining I decided that I better get ourselves a country club. I started with the basic one of 15 members, but as more people joined I needed to increase it to 50. Currently we have 24 members in the club.
As WGT doesn’t have a division as yet within the TOG forums how does everyone find out about the tournaments & events?
It started out as just word of mouth, after I got a few people in, we just chatted over TS3 and organised games from there. Once you become a member in the country club, you can create tournaments anytime. It started out as just word of mouth. I also made within our CSS channel on TS a sub channel for WGT. As most TOG members will appreciate, our games take on a whole lot more fun when there is a bit of fun and bantering going on in TS.
Do you have any upcoming events you’d like to share?
Most nights, there normally is a group of us getting on about 10pm AUST time and playing for a couple of hours. In saying that, quite often if you jump on there is some one just lurking around waiting for a game. All club created tournaments are available to see when you start playing, very rarely is there no tournaments available to play. We tend to focus more on closest to the hole, as it takes a bit of effort to try to get the best score, but at the end of the day its all about having fun.
Anything you’d like to tell our readers about the game?
The graphics are pretty good and you get the best out of it playing multiplayer. There are some good options in multiplayer such as blitz, which is basically a closest to the hole. Recently, they added a new mode which is alternative player, basically you have 2 teams and you take it in turns having a shot, so you rely on your team mate to play well.At the end of the day its all about having fun. One very important thing is to make sure you have TS3 and come with you fun jacket on, the game takes on a whole new meaning when you can congratulate or laugh at your fellow players. You can also save and share with people your awesome drives, putts or bunker shots, an example of this Saved shot. In closing, whether you play golf or not, enjoy a bit of fun, get onto WGT. Play a few rounds send me a message and I will invite you to the club (TOG members of course - not a memeber and over 25? Sign up in the TOG Barracks. With the way the popularity of WGT within TOG has grown, I am starting to think we need our own forum.
So get on , play a few rounds then come join us for a night of fun and laughs.
The Wiki on WGT is quite informative for those that would like to know more about this terrific virtual world. So, as Dr Death said go have a look it really is a fun game and just like real life golf can be just as frustrating but enjoyable all the same.
