STO: Spock Turns 80
Leonard Nimoy, American actor, film director, poet, musician and photographer turns 80 today, just 4 days after William Shatner, his co-star in Star Trek and life-long friend, celebrated his 80 birthday day. Nimoy is best known for his role as Spock in the original Star Trek series (1966-1969), multiple films, television and video game sequels.
Nimoy was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 26, 1931 to Max Nimoy and Dora Nimoy. Nimoy began acting at the age of eight in children’s and neighbourhood theater. His first major role was at 17, as Ralphie in an amateur production of Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing! He has a Master of Arts in Education and an honorary doctorate from Antioch University in Ohio.
Nimoy’s most prominence role is as the half-Vulcan, half-human Spock in the original Star Trek series. Nimoy formed a long-standing friendship with William Shatner who portrayed his commanding officer James T. Kirk. The series ran from 1966 to 1969 and Nimoy earned three Emmy acting nomination for his work. Nimoy reprise his role as Spock in Star Trek: The Animated Series, two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and in seven Star Trek motion pictures. Nimoy has also provided voiceovers for Star Trek Online
