and the top games of each type are............ *waits for the suspense to grow* ......

RTS : Starcraft, somehow even after all of these years, I still find myself drawn to the classic fight for survival against the xenomorphic Zerg.

RPG : Well, I'll be honest, its actually a toss up between 3 games here.

Japan RPG : Chrono Trigger, without a doubt the best of the best, unforgettable story, characters, make this one my number one classic.
Western RPG : Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion , quite a few years I've sunk into this game even though it isn't quite as old.
Dungeon Crawler : Diablo II, come on, you knew this one was going to be on my list!!!

FPS : Doom, The game I love so much, i wasted money just to rebuy it for my 360 Arcade Collection. This game brings me back to when my father and me used to play. Beware of the CyberDemon.

Platformer : Sonic the hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, this game IMO, is what I define as the best, some may argue Mario 3, which is prob my 2nd fav, but the cool speedy gameplay ranks this game as Number 1 in my book.

Arcade Classic : Well, because I really didn't play a lot of classic arcade games VS PC and Console games, I don't have a lot to compare, but I guess when i used to hang out with my buddie at his work, which was a pizza joint, they had Ms Pacman there, and eventually I got obsessed with the game and played it every chance I had when i was there.

Fighting : Streets of Rage 2 or 3, Not sure what the deal with this game, but Its just addicting, and in the 3rd installation of the series, you can unlock Shiva, a awesome boss character you can play as.

Puzzle : Tetris, though I never actually played the "Official" version of tetris, I played one version that was on Windows, and was a classic fav of mine.

Sim : Well this actually took a few seconds of research to remember the full name of the game, but here it is, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, a classic 486 game, not sure if anyone remembers it, but It was pretty good, though I will sadly admit my first few times playing it, I was subject to accidentally team killing my friendly planes and bombers when i was in the flying fortress top gunner position due to my lack of knowledge on who was on who's side

Well there you have it, my Top titles

I've certainly not read through the whole thread yet, but there's only one best game for me: EarthBound.

Nothing comes close. But man, there were a lot of great games on the SNES. A lot of awesome games period, back in the day. Games these days are a lot of fun too, don't get me wrong, but some of my most memorable gaming moments were spent passing the controller back and forth with my brother playing some SNES RPG.

(Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, anyone?)

Oh gosh, I love Earthbound. But I think my all time favorite has to be Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

or maybe super metroid? maybe even contra? I can't decide! Too many good ones for me :)

As much as I like Ocarina of Time and MM, I played them the other day and the graphics are abhorrent, I've been spoiled. I can't wait to see how it looks updated and in 3D on the 3DS.

Huh, never noticed this thread before.

    For me:
    My all-time favorites:
Elite - Both original with the wireframes and the Frontier sequel
Civilization - Civ I, used to play on the amiga never truly bonded with the sequels as i disliked the isometric view

    Roguelikes:
    Linley's Dungeon Crawl
    uMoria
    Angband

Sunk ridiculous numbers of hours into ASCII roguelikes :p

    Hands Down:
Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

Loved the idea of a fantasy world undergoing industrial revolution, the politics, the conflict between magic and technology, the detail put into the world and the sheer endless amount of game play.
It's still my favourite RPG ever made.

Isn't Elite the forefather of the X series by Egosoft? Or am I getting my games mixed up?

Saturn: Panzer Dragoon / Castlevania Symphony of the Night
