You can always put it up as a non-steam game with all the usual steam niceties (excluding the patching).

A report from a meeting between GameStop and financial research firm Baird is suggesting that (sob) Battlefield 3 will not be making its way to Steam. According to Develop, the key quote from the report that comes directly from the GameStop executives is "the upcoming EA title Battlefield 3 will be sold as a download through GameStop, but not through Steam."

It is not official by any means but it is certainly not looking very good for STEAM and when you have Gamestop who is a supplier saying it maybe they know something we don't.

EA revealed a digital list, not including steam.
EA released a few statements stating issues with Steam and their own business model. I doubt EA is changing their model to suit Steam and Steam probably won't either.

Good enough for me to say, won't be on Steam.

Here's an interesting item on the coming war between EA Origin and Steam...
Seems you can use Steam keys on Origin but not vice versa.

You Can Use Steam Keys On Origin

The article doesn't go into much detail and it seems to work only with EA games (obviously)

EA seem to enjoy going out of their way to piss off their customers.

It's official, no BF3 on Steam in the short term: EA Forums

I am slightly sad and I think (as with most of these corporate pissing contests) the customer is the loser; but it's not going to stop me getting BF3.

Honestly, do not mind Origin and Steam, a bit of competition. Australia really suffers from monopolies (big4banks, Coles/Wollies, telco's, electric, etc.....) This country is f**king expensive!! So, some competition, assuming it actually lowers prices for consumer, is a good thing IMO. Having said this, I have no faith at all that this will lower prices. Having said this, when Origin first released, Steam and Origin had massive sales, so maybe a bit of hope this will drive lower prices on games. For me, if gaming on BF3, will disable Steam - but I am a one game kinda person. Guess if I played several games, using two platforms would have draw backs.

Yeah, it's not really competition when it's only stocked my one of the two main competitors!

Anyhow.....I bet Activision is pissing their pants with excitment about all this fuss and are printing "Available on Steam" stickers to plaster all over MW3!
