Nice link, must have missed it if it was previously linked. Added to the sticky.
Thanks Thermal. Of course there are no garuntees. Who knows what can happen this game is alpha.
Interesting for us?
But maybe our map is too large as it is?
Daed beat me to it! Ninja'd!
I'm still leaning towards a new level; we can't really afford to expand the map.
The map uses enough resources at it's current size, expanding more will be crazy!
That said I'm in the "new survival server" camp so I'm not worried.
server directory only users 729M , but 3.3G of map.
at the way its going now, I don't mind if the map gets bigger. I think it can without too much strain.
yeah, but we'd have to travel so freaking far to get the first biomes
It'd be much cleaner starting over IMO...
yeah i spose.
I think that we should try to keep as much of the old work as possible.
Shame to throw it away.
Either keep working in the current map with the new patch (especially if damage is still not working)
or fork the map and then have two separate developments, one with the patch and one without.
Depending on how badly we want the old builds, we could work some magic with chunk editors, porting over the buildings. Would require a fair bit of effort however.
there is also some talk of teleporters, which might form a public transport system.
If we port our buildings over to survival, the question is - how many of them are defensible?
A modest proposal about the update.
Maybe we could create a new world a few days before the update and only explore a very tiny area of this world. We should dedicate our time to crafting torches which will automagically turn into lanterns in the update according to Minecraft FACTS: Big list of what Notch has ACTUALLY said. - Official Minecraft Forums
Biomes and hell portals will be generated on new map bits created after the update which is why we should only explore a tiny bit of this new map. This way we will reap the benefits of biomes and have a stockpile of eternal light sources just in case lanterns are difficult to make.
I'm all for starting over. I understand people's reticence. There are several that have put a lot more time into their work than me. I'm just dead keen to get going in a brave new world (of danger!!)!
The only issue I can see with this is I'm not sure exactly how far you have to travel to cause a new world chunk to be generated, it could be a relatively significant area in a new world.
And half the fun is the first few days where it's actually hard to survive and everyone needs to work together to get spawn-town lit up and defensible, then slowly strike off into the frontier to build their own cities etc.
If we pre-build a crap load of light sources then that initial danger, and initial team-work is lost
I say we don't make a new world until the update. Setting up a base camp in the new world will only take a few hours if it's a co-ordinates group effort.
Agreed. I'm really looking forward to that, getting together as a bunch and staking out lit, safe-zones. First for our communal town, then for ourselves and each other.
Likewise (including the having-worked-less bit). Start it off with the bang of a big community survival project, then move on to individual ones.
and we have used our current world to get the skills needed for crazy construction. Hopefully we can survive
Hmm, seems that most people are for a restart.
A few others have mentioned keeping the map if possible but there haven't been many postings.
Perhaps I could get a copy of the data before the patch update?
I'd like to keep a copy of my construction.
My ruins (ruins.of.retox) would be I think. (unfinished atm)
As for your giant pants... well, did you remember to zip?
