My bet is on a DOTA based game.

Valve has trademarked both "DOTA2" and "DOTA3"

Is it too much to hope for HL2 Ep 3?

Don't know Chief, I think I'd prefer L4D3 than DoTA.

Although I've seen suggestions that Valve's DoTA actually stands for:

    • Defense of the Akubra
    • Half Life: Defense of the Antlions
    In which case - :D

I almost kinda want valve to do a full on MMO shooter. Sadly, it'll probably be DOTA, although that's still exciting. I'll be interesting to see if they're doing it cross platform on consoles too.

I don't know if we can still use the DNF jokes.

The licence has changed hands. 3D realms, formerly Apogee software and the creators of the original duke platformers and Duke 3D have sold everything off.

Gearbox (makers of Borderlands, Brother In Arms, Half Life Blue Shift) snapped up the DNF licence (or 2K did) so they're doing their own version of the game. Gearbox have a very solid history of delivering when on acquired IPs (although I'm still waiting on their Aliens game) but none the less I'd gamble my entire savings given even odds that DNF will be released in under 24 months.

The big "Gearbox/2K releasing DNF in 2011" announcement and playable demo was big news at PAX 2010 in early September or so - plenty of vids on YouTube.

    (Later...)

Oh yeah, spot the Duke Nukem cameo walk-by in the latest Borderlands Claptrap Webisode (#4). ;)

I've never played DOTA, heard about it before but I kinda skipped Warcraft III so never really got into the mod scene for it but after reading that I really want to. Will have to track down a copy of old crafty when I get a chance - doesn't sound noob friendly tho so if anyone else wants to explore with me feel free hehe.

The guide and coaching systems also seem really interesting as they sound like a "community toolset" rather than developer built tutorials/content. I don't think I've seen anything like this in a game before:

Also loving the art style they've developed in those characters thus far. Kinda weird for Valve to be doing a fantasy game with elves in it though.

Sounds like it will be the same as the first DOTA, but with hats.

This is classic Valve strategy though isn't it?

They take mods and the super enthusiastic teams behind them like Counter Strike, Team Fortress or Day of Defeat and turn them into full and polished multiplayer games.

This is the bit that I like:
Not really sure the game itself is my cup of tea, but imagine there's some very excited people out there.
