Only been following this intermittently but do you need any special hardware for Elite?
    Is a joystick necessary etc?

It's a question of preference I think. Seems it is perfectly possibly to play the game with keyboard only, or keyboard+mouse.

I use a joystick (Saitek F.L.Y. 5) with simple flight controls such as throttle and that twists for yawing.

The game probably runs best on newer machines. My laptop is a year old, but a grunty i7 and seems to keep up nicely. Us down-under types may suffer the usual latency, otherwise it seems to be a fine little game so far.

Standard beta out at the end of the month including communications should be very interesting :)

Is the standard beta open to plebs like me or is still only for those who have bought the finished product? I have baulked at plonking 100 pounds on an unfinished crowdsourced product.

    £100 was for Premium beta.
    Alpha was £200.
There was mention of a 2nd round private beta, but Standard beta has now been announced, so am guessing Standard beta is it, which was due Feb 2014.
Most of the "Value" original backers packages were due March 2014, so had hoped we would be playing now.

Has anyone heard about package upgrade availability ?

Including the life time expansion pass.

You are talking about the life time expansion pass? If so it was mentioned in the latest newsletter:
    Elite: Dangerous Newsletter #30

    Lifetime Expansion Pass
Access to all future paid-for expansions - To be withdrawn from sale 29th July.

Even Standard Beta: 50 Pounds = AUD $88, I don't think I'd be outlaying that for a game at the moment.

Agreed. I'm REALLY keen for a proper space sim that allows you to explore, fight, trade, etc BUT without a monthly subscription and, in this case, without a whopping price tag. Yeah I know we're supporting devs, but heck I'm already supporting devs (Big Ant - cricket, DCS, etc)! :) Will watch with interest though.

Will be interesting to see what they are going to charge for the expansions. At least there is no subscription model for this game.

not sure on the expansion pass but do intend on purchasing the game before the end of the month .. just the base game though as that should give me gamma access.

Will be definitely scheduling a system upgrade for this and some other 2015 releases. The more i see of it, the more i'm falling in love.

Nah was hoping like Star Citizen they would take my money at any stage & have upgrade packages to standard beta.

Have since read they don't want my money, and aren't offering upgrades to standard beta, so guess will have to wait till release.

You can upgrade to standard beta. Just go to shop buy standard beta and the amount for the full game will be deducted from your payment at checkout page.

Last week you could only upgrade to Premium beta, not Standard beta. Believe me I tried. There was no deduction at checkout. Just as many have posted on FD forums.
BUT, yesterday it did work as you describe. Many felt they were going to leave it until Premium beta was over, but anyway it works now.
Now lets hope it was worth it :)

I did the same, I added the lifetime expansion to my founder pack rather then early beta. Really looks good and will have longer life than Star Citizen that I also have as the engine for Star Citizen is off the shelf.

Beta dropped to a reasonable price for me so picked it up this afternoon. Looks like expansion pass is already off the table.
