Hi everyone. I'm Lucy, 31 years old, been playing all sorts of video games since I was a tiny little kid. I remember being told as a child that I would 'grow out of it' at some point, but here I am. In fact, it might be appropriate to say that I've grow into it, as games are not only a pastime for me but also part of my work - I'm a PhD student working on player ethics and video games.

In terms of multiplayer games, I'm currently playing Overwatch and Hearthstone, but I do miss playing MMOs a lot (used to play World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Ultima Online, and more). I'm really pretty open to trying most kinds of games and am always looking out for the next thing to try.

I don't remember the specifics of the first machine I played games on, but one of my most vivid memories involved me sitting at a PC with my older brother and watching him play Doom. He very generously allowed me to fire a few shots...!

I hope to get the chance to meet some mature, good-natured and relaxed players and find some inspiration -- both for gaming and for research.

    :D

I can relate to missing playing MMOs. WoW used to necessitate communication in a way that made it a lot more social than any game I've encountered since. Including modern WoW. Maybe I just miss the time before voice chat.

Ethics in video games sounds like a fascinating subject. Could you share some of the observations you've made so far?

Heh I was told I would grow out of several things.

    Heh.

    No.

Congratulations! You have past our stringent don't die before 25 application requirement and have made it into TOG.

Keep in mind there is more here than the division for that flaky game you have signed up for. There are other flaky games which all have their own division and other things of wonder, joy and wtf.

Public Forums (Philistines only or less then 25. Same thing)
Member Forums (General chat, cat videos, VR, laboratories, Steam and Discord invites)
Member News (If you have a mind like mine you just laughed)
Simulation and Sports Divisions (This is for simulation and sports games!)
Strategy, RPG and other Games (This is for err... Strategy, RPG and other Games)
FPS (Brutal and horrific death. Lots of fun!)
MMORPG (Also brutal and horrific death but sometimes ponies)
Operations (The name you picked is stupid and you want to change it? Policies and stuff)

I agree. I think it's really the sense of community that brings up a lot of nostalgia.

As for what I've observed so far, well... I'm very much in the early stages, but what I'm starting to realise is that there doesn't seem to be a 'one-size-fits-all' when it comes to the kinds of in-game behaviours that players find acceptable and unacceptable. There's a really broad range of ideas about what it means to be in a virtual space compared to a physical space, and what it means to be playing or being serious. And for all the slack that players get about being amoral *ahem* assholes, I'm seeing a lot more nuance to the ways people understand various in-game behaviours, of the trolling kind or otherwise. Hoping to recruit some more participants for my first study while I'm here, actually! :D

    Welcome to TOG @Lucy S :)

Interesting introduction, can you please let us know the results if captain sparkles let's you research him.
Have known him for years and between the unicorns, goats, toothbrushes and bicycles with little ribbons on the handles bars, we are all still trying to figure him out. :p
