Yeah it does take a little getting used to - I take it you are talking about the Ogre in the tower?

Haha I had the same question when I played it. I could not for the life of me figure out the combat system to get my companions to do things on their own and fight well...

I would hold position and try and bait a few around the corner into the small room you enter from - I found DA:O quite challenging at first and yea that room in tough introduction.

Get acquainted with pausing to update orders and make sure you get some tactics sorted out. Keep with it though because once it clicks you will be set for the rest of the game.

Watched my Nerd-Adjacent Girl-Friend attempted the Darkspawn Ogre Battle. She nearly rage quit and I feared my my flatscreen getting punished.
She began again to watch her leveling (and collect more healing potions) and then defeated it. (somehow).

    I'm so proud of her.

Indeed, pausing the game frequently to (re)assess the situation and give out new orders to your party members is an absolute must while fighting!
