Just got released on Steam - looks like a lot of fun. Your first impression is that its a Diablo clone, but it has no inventory, and it basically takes the piss out of rpg games.

You make your own spells by combining elements (earth, water, lightning, arcane, fire, ice, heal, shield).

Looks like a lot of fun in co-op, mainly because the spells can be very destructive, and there is full friendly fire.

Worth a look, and its only a tenner.

This might sway some people: YouTube - WTF is Magicka?

(bear in mind that online multiplayer is currently buggy as all get-out though, but single player, local co-op and LAN work fine and the devs seem to be working hard on fixing things)

Started playing the single player, looks really good... tried multiplayer, it needs work - we tried to set up a server 3 people were on and a 4th couldnt join - Game Full... errrr....

Also when you set up a server with a password you cant join a player via steam tab thingy, as you dont get given the chance to enter the password... d'oh!

Apart from these bugs, its fun!

My warning aside, we decided to go ahead with buying the game now and just crossing our fingers that we got none of the critical 'unable to install or launch game' type bugs.

The two of us did manage to play the game (LAN) for over 6 hours, and it is a very fun game.

The bugs most certainly do exist though. It took us 3 or 4 attempts to finish chapter3 (or was it ch4) due to the fact that if any time during the boss fight we did an opposite beam cross, the other player would instantly crash out. There are plenty of checkpoints in the chapters, but no save points. Can't rejoin a running game, so it meant closing and restarting at the begining of the level.
We regularly lost weapons after deaths, because they were not visible on the ground for the revived person, and the still alive player would show that the revived person still had them in their hands.
We also experianced a reversal of effects quite a bit, where shield states were the opposite depending on whos computer you were viewing from. ie, When I had my shield off I could heal myself, but the other players heal would bounce off me as if the shield was up. If I toggled it so my shield was on (and I could no longer heal myself), they would see it as off and could heal me.

With the frequent problems I would not like to play it on the Net without voice comms, and a lot of patience.

The good bits - The merging of effects, the accidental damage/kills of your friends, the subtle ways you counter effects to help yourself (like casting fire on yourself to dry yourself off if you are wet - so you don't zap yourself if you try to cast lightning, only to find the other player cast fire on you to help at the same timel...and now you are on fire and need to cast water to get back to normal)

PS, Vlad is not a vampire - I thought he was, but he told me he wasn't so I am relieved :)

Yes Vlad is not a vampire ;)

This game is pretty hard on the single player, either that or I suck (Vlad does NOT suck!)!

Ive only just made it up to level 4 and got the M60 weapon - LOL! (Ive put the text in white, not to spoil it!)..

Tried to play some multiplayer challenge with a mate, first game went fine (well, he killed me, but it ran fine).

Then, nothing but trouble - huge lag, couldnt see games. Even ran over Hamachi, no good.

Hope they get it sorted, its so much fun when it works.

I think we need to make a list of some of our preferred combos or things to do.
Playing the game with differing numbers of players would drastically change how things work.
One thing that General Doom and I found worked very well as a duo was opposite beams being deliberatly crossed. Single player though, you can't cross beams, and 3 or 4 players would be very bad :p
Risk vs reward. If you get it right you can clear whole areas of multiple monsters before they even get on screen.
For those that don't know, If you cross beams with compatible elements they will combine and make a more powerful beam that can be directed about. If you use incompatible elements they will explode instead. If done by accident and the cross point is near a player.... Boom!
Doing it deliberatly, and at distances from yourself can make a lot of areas very easy.

I have found some rather unlikely spells can make things much easier, as long as you change you mindset too. Quiet a few fights are fought on cliffsides and rather than trying to directly damage opponents it can be quicker and easier to throw them off the side.

My unlikely spell of choice is a healing shield (W+E+right click). Spamming a few of those on top of each other causes HUGE knockback effects and as an added bonus keeps you fully healed.

Good for SP or if your team stays back because they know what you are doing ;)

It is a fun game just kinda hard to get a stable game in, my self and Greyfox tried playing it a few times recently and we had too many issues so we gave up.

Picked this up yesterday for myself and some family members.
Great little game at the pricepoint as far as I could tell from the few hrs invested thus far.
Kinda tempted to 'cheat' with the g15 but half the fun is the chaos in spell combinations and certain near-death of buddys. :D

Hopefully once multiplayer smoothens out a bit I will be able to track down some of you guys for a party.

A macro or two certainly would help out but the panic created by not having hit the correct keys and firing off some useless spell instead of your beam of death adds to the fun (=
