maybe, with the new Sanctuary world, could be a good test, activate NPC Spawn and see where its created, then 2nd try, new world, no NPC enabled, just jump in (or whatever is needed to create the first few chunks around spawn, not build anything, exit then restart server with NPC's enabled...

It could be, that the NPC village is generated on chunk creation, not on already defined chunks :)

    From Jens
Which is fine by me. Their Monday is Australia's Monday night. They probably won't release it until too late for us to work on setting up Sanctuary until Tuesday, but I'll keep you informed.

Out of a lack of understanding why it is even an issue.....why is their concern of an NPC village near spawn?

And by "NPC village" is this meant as a friendly village or a mob village?

At PAX, they were spawning practically inside the village. I believe this will be changed in 1.8 but I would like to think that the Division decides what sort of buildings go around spawn, not the chunk generation code. That said, I would like a village within one game day's travel, so that we can have a road from our spawn village to an NPC village.

The nature of what is an official Minecraft NPC hasn't really been resolved because Mojang haven't made them yet, just the village. The village is in 1.8. The NPCs will be in 1.9. On Sanctuary, everything should be friendly (i.e. no PvP, no nighttime attacks from mobs, no enemy mobs at all). We just have to hope that the server options will still allow this.

ps. I am basing this partially on how you responded to the survey. A decent number of you said you like the idea of NPCs in the game.

Yeah I don't see the issue. I wouldn't mind if "our" village connected to "theirs" to make one large village - it's within the style of what sort of village I'd want to see anyway (just a bit more cramped - it can be the slums :)), and we individually have no control over what other people build as their spawn house, so it's not like it's going to make much of a difference from a design perspective (I'd much rather see an NPC village house than a diamond pyramid for example). So I can't see why it would be a problem if it was really close.

So long as us building around it wouldn't ruin any NPCs eventually spawning... which there's probably no way to know in advance if it would.

Likewise, we don't know if the NPC villages will grow over time. Part of the coding issue with the village was whether it had to flatten bits of "land" to get space to be generated on in the first place. I prefer to play it safe and give a bit of space between spawn and a village so that we can allow for things like this.

As long as you don't confuse things and put a Nether portal in there too. Or a fishing hole outside incase an old friend comes visiting.

If not already done so, will the 1.8 server be up in time for me to return home from Ballarat possibly some time Thurs or Friday :)

cannot play MC on the N97, and the work compute pings timeout (not sure why they are based someplace in central China :( )

Sorry Snaketails, but we can't really make plans because we don't know when 1.8 will be released. Mojang is bugfixing in response to the "leaked" pre-release version. If it's released tonight, I will start Sanctuary tomorrow night. If not, then you might have time to get back. But till the release, we won't know when.

Was playing, trying to test the multiplayer (seed: Obsi). Spawned on a hill amongst fir. Later killed by a spider and was spawned right next to a village I had never seen! Wierd (but helpful, except that spiders and zombies kept killing me there until I got in a building.
