Hrmmm.... very mixed feelings here. DICE have always had difficulties with their server browsers on release - I can only hope this is their way of fixing the issue... Doesn't sound too good to me though.

They should have implemented an overlay type server browser (ala steam) in addition to the web based battlelog.

Perhaps origin could be used to deliver this down the track...

quote from a dude thats played it I suppose :
" you forgot many people talk out of the butt just to rant.

It’s VERY fast, quite nice to look at, you can make group with friend by drag-droping them in the group, group join servers, you have more filters than BC2, you can keep browsing while the game is loading in the background and THEN it pops up.

No splash screen, ALT F4 takes 1 second or 2 at max, alt tabbing is very efficient.

I’m sorry, but this system is way better than any I’ve tryied. "

This application is going to kick ass compared to the rubbish we've been dealt with in-game even since... BF2.
The only let down is going to be the alt+tabbing, but other than that, having a stand alone server browser I think is going to have less implications than that of an in-game browser.

Having the ability to group join a server is a fantastic feature! Maybe we can even have more than 20 players on our friends list :p

I sense a disturbance in the force, as if millions of gamers screamed out in angst and then fell suddenly silent.

That is an awkward sounding mechanic they're discussing with the battlelog site. hopefully it plays out better than initial impressions.

Given most of us will spend 90% of time on a TOG server, using friends list as well, could care less how simple or advanced this is.

I hope the Alt+Tabbing works better than BC2... my PC manages to lock up if I do that too often.

If you're wondering why I need to alt+tab in BC2, it's pr0n. I need something to look at in between maps! ;)

You didn't even get that level of functionality when BC2 was released for PC lol :p
DICE has a well earned reputation for screwing up the PC game browser (amongst other things....)

I like the idea of the battlelog and hope they implement some clan management features as well but do see the drawback of alt-tabing to change servers without an overlay type server browser.

The inconvenience of alt-tabing and its impact will not be truly known until the game hits open beta and finally released, as for some players it might be instantaneous while to others it might be fraught with issues depending on your hardware.

I prefer no ingame browser, hopefully third parties can plug in things like XFire, etc - provided you don't have to sit through a whole bunch of bollocks before it attempts to connect you in-game.

CounterStrike and COD4 are two brilliant examples of how you should connect to servers, not cruddy ingame browsers.

In my POV this is good for us for a few reasons:

    1. It's a lot cheaper for DICE to maintain as they won't need their games programmers going into game code to update the browser. This should lead to a more polished experience than what we're used to (the server browser has been the real weak point for the BF series IMO).

    2. Updates to the browser can be rolled out instantaneously, and not affect the core game at all.

    3. With the above in mind it becomes more trivial to improve the service and add new features that are requested by the community.

People were already logging in this way with 3rd party apps in BF2 as it was by far the most convenient method to join your friends. This is DICE seeing the writing on the wall and going with the best option for us and them. Give it a couple of years and it might be the standard.

If they successfully integrate a 3rd party browser with BF3 then that's great. I'd actually prefer they hand the browser over to someone else coz they can never seem to get their own working properly :)
